A Thatha is a piece of cloth (usually white in color) used by Sikh men who choose to tie their unshorn and uncut long beard instead of leaving it freely flowing open. The beard is neatly tied under the chin in a knot or with a help of a rubber band. Often times Sikhs use hair styling gels, sprays or any other hair lotion or simply water to moisten and shine their beard before tying it under the chin. Once the desired lotion is applied and the beard is moist and tied, the Thatha cloth is wrapped around the chin and tied in a knott on top of the head for temporarily to give the moist beard time so that it nicely dries. Once the beard is dried, the Thatha is taken off.
